Steel staying in Surrey

Surrey Scorchers are delighted to announce that Josh Steel will remain at Surrey Sports Park.

The GB International made his return to Scorchers last season after playing a key part in Manchester Giants’ victorious 2021/22 campaign, where he averaged 8 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists.

Having played semi-professionally with Kent Crusarders (2013/15) and then Duquense Univeristy (2015/17) in the U.S., Steel signed his first professional contract with Surrey Scorchers in the summer of 2017.

After a successful rookie season, where the 6ft 5’’ guard averaged ten points-per-game, the man from Harlow was retained by Scorchers for the 2018/19 season.

In January 2019, Steel made the move overseas to join Spanish side Forca Lleida and proceeded to play for Moron and Clinica Ponferrada CDP.

A return to the BBL in 2021 to play for Manchester Giants saw Steel join up with Head Coach, Lloyd Gardner, both were previously at Barking Abbey Academy together.

Having played a key role at Giants, Steel returned to Surrey Sports Park ahead of the 2022/23 season.

Steel has represented England at U16 and U18 level, whilst feature for GB at U20 level before making the transition to the GB senior team where he played in the EuroBasket Pre-Qualifiers in 2022.

“I'm excited the news is finally out, I want it to be a memorable one for us at SSP this season and be a real step in a new direction for the franchise.”

Josh Steel

“I’m delighted to welcome Josh back to the Scorchers. He adds so much to any team he plays on with his ability on both ends of the floor and his unselfish play. Injuries frustrated his season last year, but I know Josh is ready to take another step forward in his career.”
