Launched at the start of the 2017/18 season, the Scorchers Academy team play in the Southern Conference ABL league. The Scorchers Academy had a successful first year in the ABL with some of the squad even earning their debut spots on the Scorchers BBL roster.

Consisting of a first and second team, the Academy sides compete in the ABL and South East League respectively.

The Basketball Academy is based at the newly built Three Rivers Academy in Hersham, Surrey. The players have the opportunity to play top flight basketball whilst studying for A levels/BTECs in the highest quality state of the art building.

Caylin Raftopoulos, son of Surrey Scorchers men’s team Head Coach, has been appointed Academy Head coach for the 2018/19 season. The younger Raftopoulos spoke of his excitement at being appointed in his first Head Coach role.

“I am extremely excited to take this opportunity, being able to do this alongside playing is one of the main reasons I committed to scorchers for another season.”

Playing for the Scorchers in the BBL alongside his coaching role, Raftopoulos believes this combination will give him a winning formula from the bench.
“I can’t wait to get started, with the BBL season underway I’m eager to use my playing experience to provide the Academy squads with the best coaching possible.”

Not being the only coach in the family, Coach Creon Raftopoulos is a guiding figure in the basketball family and Caylin plans to use that to his advantage.

“My dad has a big influence on my coaching style and I will be absorbing as much information from him to help me and the team excel and learn.”

When asked what his goals were for the upcoming ABL season he said: “My aim is to develop the players and build on the foundations that were set last year in order to attract more young aspiring student athletes.”
