Surrey Scorchers 74 Cheshire Phoenix 70

Scorchers picked up our first win of the BBL Championship with a 74-70 victory over Cheshire Phoenix!

A terrific team performance from Creon Raftopoulos’ side sealed the deal for his side, as the offence was shared evenly with a strong defensive effort.

Four Scorchers scored in double-figures, and the rookie Evan Walshe came up huge with a key offensive rebound at the end of the game to secure the win.

It was the travelling Phoenix team who took control in the first quarter with a 10-2 lead, but Evan Walshe and Connor Cashaw led the early comeback for the Scorchers to give them the lead at the end of the first quarter.

The bench came in key in the second quarter as Skyler White and Caylin Raftopoulos hitting threes to maintain the Scorchers lead heading into half time.

Phoenix came back firing in the second half with an impressive display from Jimbo Lull and Mike McCall leading the charge for the travelling team.

They continued their offensive charge into the final quarter with a 12-0 run, narrowing the lead to one point.

But a heroic final few minutes from Evan Walshe and Connor Cashaw maintained the Scorchers lead.

With the game narrowed to just two points, a huge offensive rebound from Evan Walshe with eight seconds to play re-gained Scorchers possession – forcing Cheshire to foul.

Connor Cashaw sunk both free throws to increase the lead to four points and rounding out the victory for the Scorchers!

Creon’s side are back in action on Wednesday as they travel to Manchester Giants in the BBL Cup Quarter-Finals.
