Surrey Scorchers is delighted to announce the signing of Morakinyo Williams on a short-term contract with the option to sign for the remainder of the British Basketball League 2018/19 season.
The former GB U20 international stands at 7-foot and traditionally plays as a centre, adding a real presence to the Scorchers side.
Williams is no stranger to the BBL, having previously represented Leeds Force and Manchester Giants in 2017/18 and 2012/13 respectively.
The 30-year-old big averaged 13.3 points and eight rebounds per game during his time with Leeds Force, showing a real tenacity on the boards which Surrey have been searching for.
Speaking to Head Coach Creon Raftopoulos about his latest signing, he said: “with the departure of Ryan Richards we have been able to sign Morakinyo, who has vital BBL experience.
“He will give us an inside post up option, but is also comfortable shooting from mid-range to help space the floor.”
Raftopoulos also stressed the importance Williams will play defensively in the team as he explained, “we have struggled defensively in the paint, so getting a big to add into our rotation helps us play our guys in their more natural positions.
“Morakinyo will help us on both ends of the floor, so I’m really happy to have him on board.”
Coach also said that he had been working on replacing Josh Steel, with the hope of signing a new player early next week.
Moyakinyo will be available for selection ahead of this weekend’s home game at Surrey Sports Park against Manchester Giants, as Scorchers look to take the head-to-head over the visiting team.
