Surrey Scorchers appoint Lloyd Gardner at the helm ahead of the 2022/23 season

Surrey Scorchers are delighted to announce Lloyd Gardner as the Head Coach leading the team into the 2022/23 British Basketball Season.

Gardner takes over at the helm of Scorchers after departing Manchester Giants where he delivered their most successful season since the franchise revived in 2012.

As Head Coach of the Manchester side, Gardner delivered a 5th place finish in the British Basketball League and led the team to their first BBL Cup final falling short to last season’s dominating Leicester Riders.

Lloyd’s immediate impact into the Giants was seen in his recruitment of big British basketball names such as Dan Clark, who returned from overseas to the BBL for the first time in his career. Team GB’s Will Saunders and Jamell Anderson also joined the campaign to collate one of the most versatile rosters last season.

Excited to join the Scorchers family Lloyd commented “I’m delighted to be given the opportunity to lead the Surrey Scorchers and hoping to be part of building a successful franchise. I look forward to meeting the Scorchers fans and can’t wait for our first game and the upcoming season.

Lloyd is now with us at the Sports Park and has already begun his recruitment process as the club looks forward for some exciting announcements this off season.

Surrey Sports Park Managing Director Gavin Baker commented “We are incredibly excited to bring Lloyd in to lead the Scorchers Franchise. He has proven himself in British Basketball achieving success with Manchester Giants last season and his work with young player development at Barking Abbey Basketball Academy. As our club grows, change is always going to be prevalent, and Lloyd will be a great asset for the future of the programme and the continued development of Surrey Scorchers both on and off the court”.
