Report: Wolves hit century to prevent Scorchers comeback

Surrey Scorchers turned on the charm in the 3rd quarter in last night’s game at Worcester Wolves but it wasn’t enough to prevent the hosts from taking a 108-92 win in the final BBL Championship round before Christmas.

Yet another points haul from KC Ross-Miller drove Scorchers back from being 21 points down at one point of the game as the fresh US import once again turned heads on the basketball court.

Sitting 3rd in the league table, Wolves were always going to be a tough opposition and that was proved correct from the off as Worcester quickly overturned a 0-5 run for the visitors straight from tip-off. 10 first quarter points for Pavol Losonsky warmed him up for what would be a big night for the Wolves captain, leading them to a 32 point opening quarter.

Nick Schlitzer opened the 2nd quarter with a 3 from down town before the home side extended their lead to 16 points early on. With Scorchers still struggling at the defensive end, a tight 2nd quarter ended in favour of Wolves once again who took a 55-39 advantage into the half time break.

A sloppy start to the 3rd saw Scorchers miss three straight chances on the basket before Wolves extended their advantage to 21 points – their biggest lead of the night. This was until Scorchers hit a 12-0 run to claw their opponents right back at 60-51, thanks to breathless attacking from all 5 Scorchers on court, setting up a thrilling final quarter.

Elvisi Dusha landed a 3 early on in Q4 to continue the comeback for his side with the deficit down to just 8 points. Wolves continued to work hard and take their chances, new signing Orlan Jackman picking out baskets for fun from the field, but with the in-form Ross-Miller also knocking in shots for fun the lead was down to 5 with 4.05 left on the clock.

It was at that point which Wolves started to claw back and close out the game. 7 straight successful attempts on the basket pushed them past the century mark and it was game over for Scorchers, who took their 7th BBL Championship defeat this season.

Ross-Miller finished top of the Surrey scorers with 26pts, including 11 from 13 free throws, closely followed by Schlitzer on 20pts and captain Tayo Ogedengbe on 17pts.
