Report: Scorchers slump in 2016 opening fixture

952 basketball fans packed into Surrey Sports Park on Saturday night as Surrey Scorchers got their 2016 off to a less than ideal start with a 66-91 defeat to the Worcester Wolves.

Despite a close first quarter, Wolves turned on the charm for a sell-out Guildford crowd in what their Head Coach Paul James branded as one of their performances of the season so far.

The visitors got themselves off to a strong start to the game, with both sides exchanging early leads before Wolves pulled away with a 7 point lead thanks to one from the line for Pavol Losonsky. Baskets from KC Ross-Miller, Henry Wilkins and Elvisi Dusha pulled Scorchers back to take it to a 1 point game at the first break (18-19).

Scorchers struggled to hit the target in the 2nd quarter, taking 4 minutes to score when Christian Behrens stopped the basket drought. Wolves had by this point extended their lead to 6 and continued to build it throughout the period, leaving a 30-44 score line at the half time break.

Nick Schlitzer gave Scorchers hope with 5 points to open Q3 but a string of consecutive turnovers killed off any chance of a comeback for Scorchers, as Wolves closed out the 3rd and 4th periods on style thanks to far more clinical finishing on the offence than they hosts.

KC Ross-Miller shone through on an average night for Scorchers, scoring 22 points. Behrens followed up with 15.

Scorchers will once again be looking to improve their defence on Sunday afternoon when they travel to the Sheffield Sharks for the 2nd game of 2016’s opening BBL Championship weekend.

The next home game will see Surrey attempt to take revenge on the Wolves in a 3.30pm tip-off at Surrey Sports Park on Sunday 24th January. Click here to buy your tickets online now and be part of what is expected to be another bumper crowd!
