Josh Steel is back in blue

Surrey Scorchers are delighted to return GB international Josh Steel to Surrey Sports Park

The last time Scorchers made play-offs Steel made a name for himself in his professional debut season. The Surrey side signed the young talent in the most successful season in franchise history.

Since then, the 6’5 guard has gained overseas experience playing in Spain for Force Lleida, Moron and Clinica Ponferrada CDP before Lloyd Gardner recruited Steel back to the BBL to play for the Giants last season.

In what was Giants most successful campaign since re-emerging into the BBL, Steel played an integral part to the teams winning record averaging 8 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists off the bench.

Although young in his career, Steel plays with composure on court. He has the ability to shoot the ball above 40% across the season seen both in Spain and last year for Giants.

It was no surprise Head Coach Lloyd Gardner would bring this talent back to Surrey after years of coaching the London native as a junior at Barking Abbey Academy.

Steel singing high praises of Coach Gardner said: “Coming back to Surrey as an older more mature person and player is exciting, this franchise along with the fan base have always shown me love.

I’m glad I’ve been able to make my way back here to help the franchise see more success than it has in recent times.

Most people also never get the opportunity to play for their childhood/favourite coach even once during their pro career, and so to have the chance to reignite another franchise with Lloyd is special.”

Scorchers Head Coach Lloyd Gardner commented: “Josh is a player I have had the pleasure of working with for a long time. He is well known to fans in Surrey and I’m sure they will be as happy to have him back at the sports park as I am.

Josh has proved to be a high level BBL player and is a consistent performer in this league despite the fact that he is still young. He is coming off the back of a good season in Manchester and is able to impact the game at both ends of the floor.”
