HICKS HOPES TO CONTINUE GOOD FORM

Scorchers point guard Tony Hicks is looking to continue his impressive form at Surrey Sports Park on Sunday when they take on the Worcester Wolves.

The 23-year-old contributed 20 points, 3 assists and four steals in the dismantling of the Manchester Giants a fortnight ago.

He bettered that performance last weekend with 27 points, 8 assists and 4 steals in a big win on the road against the Glasgow Rocks, earning a place in the BBL team of the week.

With the Scorchers looking to make it three wins in a row against Worcester on Sunday, Hicks believes the side’s impressive offensive performances has been fuelled by tough defence.

He said: “It is our defence that allows us to get into a flow with transition baskets and early offence.

“We want to dictate on defence and that allows us to get stops and play in transition which we are best at.”

“I didn’t play too well against Glasgow last time and I definitely had a sour taste in my mouth.

“I wanted to play well and I tried to play without thinking.

When I think too much, I don’t play well. It’s that simple.”

Josh Steel made a statement against Glasgow, moving into the starting line-up to replace Alex Owumi who was unavailable. Steel poured in 20 points shooting 7-8 from the field.

Hicks said: “We were not at all surprised by Josh’s performance.

“He’s a baller. He’s athletic, plays defence, and plays the game the right way.”

Heading into the game against Worcester, Hicks highlighted that the team needs to avoid complacency having already beaten Wolves 84-80 in the home opener at Surrey Sports Park back in October.

He added: “We beat them the first time round so I think more than anything it’s about us not being complacent and having some maturity in how we approach practices and the game on Sunday.

“We have to continue to focus on getting stops defensively and playing the right brand of basketball on the offensive end.”
