Coach Creon: “We know we let the fans down”

Scorchers Head Coach Creon Raftopoulos addresses Surrey fans following a disappointing weekend for his side, which saw two heavy defeats inflicted in as many days.

An impressive Worcester Wolves performance saw the visitors take a 66-91 win at Surrey Sports Park in front of a sell-out crowd on Saturday evening, which was followed up by a crushing 107-55 defeat at Sheffield Sharks on Sunday.

Following the double-defeat Coach Creon wanted to reassure fans that while losing is part of the game, weekends like that are not part of the game plan.

Listen to Creon's interview or read below:

“This weekend was one where we learnt a lot about ourselves. We are a very young team in terms of BBL experience and we learnt a lot about playing back-to-back games.

“The important part for us as a group is we stick together and stay positive because being young there are times where we will get really good highs and, especially after this weekend, ultimate lows.

“The pressure of it was not just based on performance as individuals but also as a coach and a player to put on a performance worthy of the fans that turn up and support you.

“In Saturday’s performance against Worcester we let down the fans and took the weight of that on our shoulders into Sheffield and that didn’t work out well for us.

“Things don’t get any easier for us because face the undefeated champions, Newcastle Eagles, this Friday but we’ve got to take it as a big challenge. You never know in sport what could happen and I truly believe once we get our defensive communication back to where it was at the beginning of the season we will be able to become competitive again.

“We are at the halfway mark of the season and I’m not happy with the record we have right now but I have to remind myself that we are a new team and only three wins from the top five.

“I just want to thank the fans for sticking with us. At the game on 2nd the atmosphere was amazing and we have to give the performances to match the support that the fans give us.

“Be patient and know that we are working as hard as we can as a coaching team and as players to take Surrey to the top half of the BBL.”

Scorchers are currently in training in preparation for Friday night’s game at the Newcastle Eagles. Their next home game will be on Sunday 24th January when the Worcester Wolves visit once again for a 3pm tip-off.
