Cheshire Phoenix 74 Surrey Scorchers 76

Scorchers picked up their fourth win of the season in the BBL Championship by defeating Cheshire Phoenix on the road!

Creon Raftopoulos’ side secured the head-to-head against Phoenix behind 21 points from Ryan Richards!

It was a slow start to the contest as neither side could take the lid of the basket.

Richards sparked the offence for the Scorchers with a ferocious steal and slam, before Cameron Hildreth entered the game and scored a beautiful and-one lay-up.

Scorchers led the game 22-18 at the end of the opening period.

Ben Thomas’ Phoenix side battled back in the second quarter as former Scorcher Matthew Bryan-Amaning took control of the offence, while Jimbo Lull and Kyle Carey combined to give Cheshire a one-point lead heading into half-time.

Creon Raftopoulos’ team talk seemed to work perfectly as Scorchers raced out into a lead at the beginning of the third quarter.

Everything was falling for Surrey as Richards and Tony Hicks led the charge for the Scorchers, as they won the period 27-16 and led by double-digits heading into the fourth quarter.

But Phoenix were not going down without a fight, as Kahron Ross and Jimbo Lull fired Cheshire all the way back with a minute to play.

Tony Hicks was fouled and failed to convert two free-throws, and Kyle Carey converted on the opposing end to make it a one-point game.

Cameron Hildreth converted one of two free-throws to make it a two-point game, and blocked Carey’s three-point attempt at the buzzer to ensure Surrey travelled home with the win.

Scorchers move to 4-10 in the BBL Championship.
