Surrey Scorchers 88 Newcastle Eagles 84

Scorchers picked up a much-needed BBL Championship win against the Newcastle Eagles at Surrey Sports Park!

Tony Hicks and Lacey James led the way for Surrey with 17 points each, as they were able to topple the Eagles to kickstart a playoff push.

Surrey started the game on the front foot as Lacey James threw down multiple dunks to build some momentum.

Justin Gordon rallied back for the Eagles with a ferocious jam of his own, but Scorchers led by two points at the end of the opening quarter.

Creon Raftopoulos’ side stepped up a gear in the second quarter as the backcourt duo of Connor Cashaw and Tony Hicks led the way for Surrey alongside Evan Walshe and Cameron Hildreth.

Scorchers won the quarter 22-15 to take a nine-point lead into the half-time interval.

Newcastle came back fighting in the third quarter as Rahmon Fletcher and Cortez Edwards reduced the lead to five points at the end of the third.

Justin Gordon and Fletcher rallied all the way back and took a one-point lead with three minutes to play.

But some big plays from Surrey, including a three-pointer from Hicks with 30 seconds to play, ensured Scorchers held firm to take a much-needed win on their home floor.

Scorchers are back in action next Sunday as we travel to Glasgow Rocks!
