Scorchers Sign Wellian

Surrey Scorchers is delighted to announce the signing of Chaed Wellianfor the remainder of the 2018-19 BBL season.

The 26-year-old forward, who stands 6ft 9 tall, arrives from Icelandic side FSU Selfoss with a reputation as a three-point expert.

He averaged 20.3 points and an impressive 10 rebounds per game in a spell with UMF Sindri HOFN earlier this season, having previously also played for SC Karlsruhe, Saarlouis and Crailsheim in Germany, plus Swedish club Umea, Svendborg in Denmark and NCAA1 college Tennessee State. In 2012, whilst at Junior College, he won the Conference Championship as part of the Atlanta Metropolitan squad.

“I’m very happy to be here, and ready to give the team the elevation and extra spark that they might need. I’m pretty excited. Now I can’t wait to get out onto court,” admitted Wellian, who assessed his strengths as “versatility, defensively and offensively. Inside-out basketball. Defensively, I think I can make a big difference.”

Although Wellian is quick to credit Raftopolous’s role in his signing, saying “it was the coach that sold it to me, especially the vibe that I got from him – he made me feel at home right away”, a familiar face from the Scorchers’ recent past also had a big hand in the deal.

“I grew up with Gerald Robinson, so it was an easy decision for me to make. He’s been calling me almost every day, asking how I like it and if I’ve been here yet, or there yet around Guildford.”

Coach Creon Raftopolous said: “Sometimes you select a player based on past stats, or video highlights, but Gerald Robinson and Jordan Williams both recommended Chaed as a good player to have. When you have players whose opinions you can trust, you hope that it’s going to work out.

“Chaed has come in and shown great energy, and fitted in with the guys, so I’m really excited about what he can do for us. He has his mind set on playing some defence – anybody who can bring some defensive energy for us is going to be a bonus. He’s a very skilled big man that’s capable of playing inside-out. But the most important part is that he’s got a high basketball IQ, and that helps when you need to adjust to a new team in a short period of time.

Chaed is available for selection as the Scorchers begin their five-game roadtrip this weekend, with Friday’s visit to the Copper Box to face London Lions.

Following the signing of Chaed Wellian, Jonathan Dogbo has left the Scorchers. We thank Jonathan for his efforts with the Scorchers and wish him well for the future.
