REPORT: SURREY SCORCHERS 84-89 DBL SHARKS SHEFFIELD

Scorchers have suffered their second defeat of the weekend, losing 84-89 to the DBL Sheffield Sharks at Surrey Sports Park.

The Scorchers rallied from a 13 point halftime deficit but couldn’t get the job done at the end of the game.

Alex Owumi lead the way for the Scorchers with 16 points, followed up by Jordan Williams with 14.

The game was delayed by an hour as Sheffield travelled from Yorkshire through snowy conditions.

Once the game eventually got underway a three point barrage from Alex Owumi and Tony Hicks kept the Scorchers level with Sheffield.

But the Sharks took over with 10 unanswered points and lead 24-18 at the end of the first quarter.

Multiple trips to the free throw line slowed the tempo of the game in the second quarter as Sheffield took control and cruised to a 45-32 lead at the break.

The Scorchers didn’t lie down after the interval as Tayo Ogedengbe and Hicks combined for six quick points to bring the Scorchers within seven.

The sides continued to trade baskets in a high scoring quarter. The Sharks’ lead was cut to eight points heading into the final period.

Josh Steel took over the final quarter with multiple baskets and a huge steal to keep Scorchers in it. Ogedengbe and Steel combined once more to bring the Scorchers within three points, but failed to get a shot off before the time expired. Sharks took the win 89-84.

The Scorchers now have a week without a game before they return to Surrey Sports Park for a Christmas tie against the Leicester Riders on Friday 22nd December.
