Report: Rocks edge win in Thriller

Surrey Scorchers continue their search for a first BBL Championship win of 2016 after falling just short of a win on the road to Glasgow Rocks on Sunday evening.

The lead exchanged hands numerous time as both sides matched one and other on paper, only for Rocks’ accuracy late on in the game securing them their 10th league win of the season.

Coach Creon has a depleted roster for the tie, with Henry Wilkins and Jordan Williams missing through illness and injury, meaning all players in attendance were prepped for a share of the minutes on court.

Rocks quickly took an 8-2 lead in the early exchanges of the game, before an 11-1 run for the visitors saw them lead by 3 with 3.09 left on the clock. Scorchers continued to edge their hosts late on in the period, but Glasgow tied the meeting 17-all heading into the first break.

Scorchers were looking good for a strong lead at half-time, taking a 5 point advantage twice in the 2nd quarter, only for a string of errors to allow the clinical Glasgow shooters chances on the basket and lead 42-38 midway into the game.

3s from Nick Schlizter and Tayo Ogedengbe gave Scorchers the perfect start to Q3 and to level the scores once again, but Rocks continued to edge ahead and they held a 5 goal lead after the 3rd (64-59).

Scorchers kept Rocks’ lead down to a single point as the clock ticked down, before Tayo potted two from the charity line to level the game at 77-all. A missed 3 point attempt followed for the Surrey captain which proved vital in the closing moments of the game, allowing Glasgow to close out and take the win 88-82, with GB star Kieron Achara netting a huge 30 point haul in the win.

Schlitzer topped Surrey’s scorers with 17pts, including 5 from 5 at the free throw line, plus a 71% field goal success rate for Andreas Schreiber earning him 11 points.

Scorchers now head into a double-header BBL Championship weekend as they head to the capital on Friday evening to take on the London Lions (7.30pm tip-off) before hosting the Plymouth University Raiders at Surrey Sports Park on Sunday afternoon (3.30pm tip-off).

Tickets for this game and all other Scorchers games this season are available now.
