Report: Phoenix rise to the Occasion for Win

Surrey Scorchers came within a single point a fine comeback win on Friday evening, only to fall to a 88-89 defeat in the dying seconds of the tie against the Cheshire Phoenix.

KC Ross-Miller snatched a huge 35pt haul for his biggest scoring tally of the season so far, in what was another frustrating night for Scorchers at Surrey Sports Park.

Phoenix opened the night with a narrow lead, extending to 6 points at the end of the opening quarter to kick off what would be a close battle throughout. Fullah looked lively from the off, completing numerous slam dunks to keep Surrey within a few points of their opponents.

Q2 saw the visitors extend their lead to 14 points midway into the quarter as they looked to take control over the tie. Schlitzer, Dusha, Johnson, Williams and Ross-Miller all looked for early baskets in the quarter but with little dropping the lead sat at 7 points to Cheshire at the half time break (42-52).

Andreas Schreiber flew out with a 3 pointer to boost the confidence of both the home players and the home crowd, before a Williams 2 at the end of the period saw Scorchers take the stanza by 6 points (63-67). Could another comeback be on the cards?

TJ picked up a vital rebound early in Q4 to hand Fullah a chance for 2 but again Phoenix cruised ahead to lead by 14pts with 6 mins on the clock. Coach Creon Raftopoulos called a timeout to regroup his side, which appeared to work as Schlitzer and Ogedengbe landed straight 3s to begin the comeback.

Ross-Miller took 1 from the line followed by 2 with 0.57 remaining, before Schreiber landed a huge dunk to bring the deficit down to just 2 points at 87-89. Danny Huffor’s foul on Ross-Miller put the pressure on the top scorer to score both from the charity line, but with only 1 sinking it was game over for Scorchers, who once again were left heartbroken.

Ross-Miller’s 35 point stash was followed up by Fullah on 14pts, with Williams taking 14 rebounds proving that a defeat came despite hard work across the court.

Scorchers travel to the Leicester Riders on Saturday 5th March for their next BBL Championship fixture, before travelling to Cheshire for revenge the following day.
