REPORT: ESH GROUP EAGLES NEWCASTLE 87-76 SURREY SCORCHERS

Surrey Scorchers crashed out of the BBL Trophy first round after a 87-76 defeat to Newcastle Eagles at Sport Central.
Eagles overturned a nine-point deficit from the end of the third quarter where Scorchers lead 70-61.

Club captain Tayo Ogedengbe top-scored for Scorchers with 19 points, followed by Tony Hicks with 17 and Alex Owumi with 11.

Eagles’ Saah Nimley finished the game with 28 points while Jaysean Paige put 26 points on the board for the home side.

At the end of the first quarter the sides could not be separated at 21 points apiece before a strong second quarter put Scorchers ahead at half-time.

12 of Hicks’ 17 points came in the first half while Josh Steel’s 10 points were vital to the first-half performance.

Ogedengbe delivered nine points in the third quarter as Scorchers took control to take a 9-point lead into the final quarter.

The league-leaders took control in the final quarter as a brilliant defensive performance from the Eagles shut Scorchers out for more than six minutes.

Eagles finished the game with 26 points in the final quarter as they advance to the next round of the BBL Trophy.
