Surrey Scorchers have made it through to the semi-finals of the BBL Cup for the first time since the 2008/09 season thanks to an inspired team performance.
Worcester Wolves 75-94 Surrey Scorchers
Having already lost to Wolves in the league this season, the Scorchers knew they were in for a tough game and started slowly as they found themselves 6-1 down inside the opening two minutes. Surrey hit back when Tayo picked up a double-double, moving them into the lead for the first time. The game continued to be an even contest until a 2 from Chaz Rollins started a run of 12 straight points for the Scorchers, as they finished the quarter leading 25-18.
The away side started the second quarter in a similar fashion to how they finished the first, thanks to Will Neighbour going 2/2 from a free-throw and Rollins picking up another 2. Wolves pulled the scores back to just 6 behind with four minutes still to play in the quarter. However, some good play between Quincy Taylor and Rollins saw the Scorchers regain the momentum and a 3 from Will Maynard just as the buzzer sounded gave the team a 49-35 lead going into half-time.
Having been behind for most of the first two-quarters, Wolves knew they had to change the game and moved to within 11 points after some good play of their own. The teams then went on a period of sharing twos between them going into the final 4 minutes. A 3 from Taylor throw kept the scores ticking over for Surrey as they lead 65-56 at the end of Q3.
Already leading, the away side got off to the best possible start in Q4 as first Will Maynard picked up a 3 and then Tayo picked up another to make the score 73-61 in Surrey’s favour. The ever persistent Tayo picked up another couple of twos as the Scorchers took a 15 point lead with 3:29 left on the clock. Wolves hit back, but a couple of points from Rollins and Taylor helped see out the lead as the Scorchers won 94-75.
