HICKS CALLS FOR FOCUS AHEAD OF BIG WEEKEND

Scorchers point guard Tony Hicks has called for the team to remain focused and alert on defence, as they head into a double-header this weekend.

Scorchers begin with a trip to Newcastle tomorrow to take on the Eagles in the BBL Trophy.

They then return to Surrey Sports Park on Sunday, where they face the DBL Sharks Sheffield in the BBL.

Scorchers head into the weekend coming off of a big win against Plymouth Raiders last Sunday.

Scorchers won 84-80 with a scoring barrage from Jordan Williams, who poured in 25 points off the bench while Hicks added 16 points in the win and believes that defence was the reason they came away with a victory.

He said, “It definitely took us a while to get organized which has been a weakness so far this season but I think once we settled into the game, started getting stops and played simple basketball on offence we began to take control of the game.”

Williams’ performance made him the sixth Scorchers player to lead the team in scoring this season. Tony Hicks acknowledged the depth of the team.

“Jordan is more than capable of scoring and we have lots of other guys who can do this too.

“This makes things extremely difficult for other teams defensively.

“As long as we continue to respect each others talents and care about winning more than anything, then this can continue to happen.”

After the trip to Newcastle, Scorchers return to league action on Sunday against DBL Sharks Sheffield who they have already face twice this season.

Scorchers won on the road on the opening day of the season, before Sharks eliminated them from the BBL Cup in November.

Hicks has called for the team to be more consistent after the team have won three of their past four games.

He added: “The second time we played Sheffield we simply did not come out ready to play.

“We need to play play more consistently. There isn’t much separation in this league, so we can’t continuously put ourselves in a hole to start off every game and try to fight an uphill battle.

“If we come ready to play with intensity on defence and simple play on offence we will be fine going forward.”
