Recap

Scorchers suffered a second consecutive BBL Cup defeat as Worcester Wolves shaded a tight contest at the Sports Park Arena.

Scorchers edged the first quarter but thereafter it was the visitors who took each period by a narrow margin to maintain their own 100% start to the season.

Wolves led by eight midway through the third quarter but Scorchers fought back to build a slender lead only for Wolves to come-back again and seal a win despite neither team being at their best.

Q1 set the tone. The lead changed hands several times but Caylin’s big three from in the corner put Scorchers ahead after 10 minutes. Adrian Kuyinu weighed in with his own triple but steadily Wolves roared back and built their own advantage

Momentum, though, shifted back to the Scorchers in the closing seconds of the half, and triples from Kuyinu and Flanigan ensured the hosts went back to the locker-room consoled by the knowledge that their three-point deficit could easily have been greater.

Despite strong Scorchers’ defence, Wolves increased their lead, only for Skyler White to land a three-pointer which brought the hosts back to within four. It was a single-point game with Hawthorne’s three from the elbow but Wolves managed to hold Scorchers off to the three-quarter mark and led by five going into the final period.

Caylin Raftopoulos netted two triples in quick succession to sneak Scorchers in front, and when Kuyinu extended the lead, more robust defence, from Ogedengbe, ensured it was held.

Wilkins beat the clock-shot buzzer with a nerveless three to retake a two-point advantage but thereafter, into the final 100 seconds, Wolves managed to withstand Scorchers’ attempts to narrow the gap.

Creon’s team travel to Plymouth to face the Raiders next weekend before welcoming London City Royals to the Sports Park Arena on Saturday 19 October – tickets for all home games are available here.
