DBL SHARKS SHEFFIELD 78-81 SURREY SCORCHERS

Surrey Scorchers made the perfect start to their 2017/18 BBL season on Friday evening with a 78-81 win over the DBL Sheffield Sharks on the road.

Head Coach Creon Raftopoulos was unavailable for family reasons, but his team pulled out the win going into another road game on Sunday when they face London Lions.

Leading Scorers – Alexander 22, Gachette 14, Marsden 11 (Sharks) – Hicks 17, Owumi 16, Robinson 13 (Scorchers)

Turning Point – The game was level at 42-42 heading into the locker rooms before Surrey made their move in the third as they opened up a double-digit advantage and were able to hold on down the stretch.

Key Stat – Surrey did a good job keeping the often dominant Mike Tuck and Rob Marsden relatively quiet as the duo were held to a combined 20 points on 9-of-23 shooting.

Game Hero(es) – Tony Hicks top scored with 17 points in the win for the Scorchers, but captain Tayo Ogedengbe landed a dagger 3-pointer in the final minute having started 1-of-8 from the field.

Scorchers return to action on Sunday afternoon when they take on the London Lions in a 4pm tip-off at the Copper Box Arena.
