Surrey Scorchers is delighted to welcome Caylin Raftopoulos back to Surrey Sports Park for the 2019-20 BBL season.
The 26-year-old Point Guard returns for a third season with Scorchers, having previously also played for Surrey Heat in the 2012-13 season. In between, Caylin – the son of Scorchers Head Coach, Creon Raftopoulos – spent two seasons with Worcester Wolves, with whom he won the 2013-14 BBL Play-Off Final.
Last season, Caylin achieved the sixth-best three-point shooting percentage in the BBL, with 43.5%, justifying his reputation as ‘Mr 3-Point’. In addition, he averaged 6.9 points per game, 1.6 rebounds and 1.9 assists.
Caylin is also Head Coach of the Scorchers Academy, based at Three Rivers Academy in Hersham, and Coach Creon said: “Caylin plays an important role in our franchise, on the court and off the court. As well as being Head Coach of our Academy, he contributes to the growth and delivery of our community programs.
“Last season his performances on the court were a positive in a tough season, and we expect his shooting ability and ability to spread the floor will play a pivotal part in our up-tempo style of play.”
Caylin admits: “I had a long think about my future this summer, after making the transition into coaching, but it’s great to be back. Personally, I had one of my best seasons in the BBL last year – I was a bit more relaxed, and I guess that comes with experience. It was my sixth year in the BBL, I’m comfortable in the league, more mature and I understand the game a lot more. The coaching side of things helps me read the game better – I was finding myself in good positions at the right time and I was shooting the ball really well.
“I’m looking to at least replicate that, if not go better this season. Not making the Play-Offs was a big disappointment (in 2018-19) so that will be one of our goals from the get-go – to get a top eight place and make some noise in the Play-Offs.”
