Behrens signs for Scorchers

GB rookie Christian Behrens has put pen to paper and signed for Surrey Scorchers.

The 22 year old is a graduate of the University of California, where he averaged 4.5 points and 3.3 rebounds during the 2014/15 season.

Behrens began his pro-career earlier this year after signing for Austrian top-flight side WBC Wels after opting not to continue with his final year of eligibility for the Cali Golden Bears.

Christian was invited to train with a 19-man GB squad last summer ahead of their friendly against New Zealand's Tall Blacks and a tournament in the Netherlands, as the only new name in the squad.

Following the signing, Coach Creon Raftopoulos said: “I am delighted to welcome Christian to the team. He is a great talent with a positive attitude to the game and will be a welcome addition to our roster.”

The forward will be available for selection at Saturday’s home game against the London Lions following a whole week of training with the rest of the Scorchers roster.

With the all important point guard position still vacant, Coach Creon wants to reassure fans that the team are in competitive shape ahead of the BBL Cup clash: “We are more than capable of going out there and getting the win.

“I didn’t want to rush out and bring in a point guard who would not fit into the team or my plans, just for the sake of filling the gap, as that would be counter-productive to what we are trying to do here at Scorchers.

“The good news is that we have a man lined up, who will be arriving next week. Saturday’s game was a little too soon to bring him in, but we will be revealing all after the weekend.”

Tickets for Saturday’s BBL Cup game against the Lions are on sale now. Fans are reminded that buying online is cheaper and quicker than on the door – click here to purchase now.
