Recap

Surrey Scorchers fell short to a high-flying Esh Group Eagles Newcastle side on the road in the British Basketball League Championship.

Creon Raftopoulos’ side were unable to overcome the current league leaders, who remain unbeaten thus far this season.

The opening quarter suggested the game would be a much tighter affair than it eventually turned out to be.

Following on from his MVP winning performance at the British All-Star Basketball Championships last weekend, Jordan Williams impressed in the early stages for Scorchers.

Captain Tayo Ogedengbe and Quincy Taylor were also on target for the Surrey side, the quarter ending 20-23 in Scorchers’ favour.

However, Eagles rallied after the first break, showing an offensive tenacity that was lacking in the opening contest.

Victor Moses caused havoc for the Scorchers’ defence, helping his side establish a 16-point lead at the half-time buzzer.

It was the penultimate quarter where the game was truly wrapped up.

Eagles moved through the gears to find a level of play that proved too much for Surrey to handle, Rahmon Fletcher pulling the strings for the hosts.

A stunned Scorchers side were unable to make the most of their possessions, and Eagles were all too happy to punish them for it, closing out the quarter 81-62.

The home side showed no signs of slowing up in the final match-up, consistently overpowering Scorchers in offense and remaining resilient in defence.

Eagles had ensured revenge for their defeat at the All-Star Championships just five days previously, emerging 114-82 winners on the night.

Scorchers will now look to bounce back from their defeat as they face Worcester Wolves on Sunday (21st Oct) at Surrey Sports Park.
