Scorchers head west for the second time in just over two weeks this Sunday, as we visit the Plymouth Pavilions to face the Raiders in a BBL Cup south group tie.

Raiders lost narrowly to London City Royals on opening weekend, and saw last Sunday’s game against London Lions postponed.

Coach Paul James has made five new signings this summer to augment the retention of five players from last season’s Play-Off semi-finals squad.

Lithuanian small forward Kostas Jonuška and Americans Jackson Hyland (combo guard) and Tyrell Johnson (forward), are joined by Isla Brandon, who has stepped up from Derby Trailblazers in NBL Division One, and centre Theo Turner from Recklinghausen in Germany.

Returning to the Pavilions are Rashad Hassan – the league’s leading points scorer, averaging 20.04 per game – plus Denzel Ubiaro, Tola Okiki, Josh Palmer and Raiders’ 2018-19 MVP, Josh Wilcher. Hassan and Wilcher were typically influential against the Royals, with 25 and 24 points, respectively.

Creon Raftopoulos expects to have a fully-fit roster for the journey to Devon, as Scorchers look to earn a first victory of the season.

“There are a lot of positives that people have seen already – we’ve played some good basketball, but it’s learning how to win. Winning is a habit and it comes with experience,” he admits, before highlighting an inability to rebound as key to defeats against both Bristol Flyers and Worcester Wolves. “It’s been two games now that we’ve been totally killed on the backboards. On the defensive side we need to help each other.

“Right now it’s about the whole group learning to do things together. Once we get that first win, we’ll be fine.”

Following Sunday’s game, Scorchers then defend their BBL All-Stars Championship title at the Copper Box Arena on Sunday 13 October, and return to the Sports Park Arena on Saturday 19 October to host London City Royals. Tickets are available here.
