TAYO: We have a lot to put right this weekend

Last Sunday was a game that Scorchers would rather forget after they lost to London City Royals 73-94.

This was the 16th loss of the season for the Surrey side. With 14 games remaining, we spoke to captain Tayo Ogedengbe on his outlook for the remainder of the 2018/19 Championship.

Looking back on the season so far, he felt that the team have yet to show their true potential.

“We have gone to the final buzzer with a few of the top teams in the league, showing we really can compete. But ultimately, the consistency had not been there to convert those into wins.”

When asked about what a realistic goal for the Scorchers this season was, he remained hopeful of their chances, “at the moment we’re hoping more games will fall our way,” he said.

“Hopefully if that happens and some teams pick up a few losses, we will still be able to sneak a play-off spot.”

Despite Scorchers bad run, Tayo praised Head Coach Creon Raftopoulos on how he’s motivated the team throughout.

“Creon has been a great motivator, breaking down goals for us each practice, week and game to keep the guys focused.”

However, he said that the Scorchers fans that turn up week in, week out at the Surrey Sports Park are his real driving force. “For me personally, getting results for our fans and the club is a massive motivator. Without them, we wouldn’t be here.”

Surrey Scorchers face DBL Sharks Sheffield at Surrey Sports Park this Sunday for the final home game before four-week a stint on the road.

Tayo feels confident that the team can find the win they so desperately need. “The team is complete, practice has been great end everyone is eager to put a win on the board,” he said.

“We have a lot to put right this weekend and a lot to prove, but I know we can do it.”
