DBL Sharks Sheffield 76-81 Surrey Scorchers

Surrey Scorchers ended their wait for a first league win of the 2016-17 campaign after beating DBL Sharks Sheffield 76-81 on the road.

The Scorchers had started the season 0-5 in the BBL Championship, but put together a strong performance to see off the Sharks.

Mike Ochereobia tallied 17 points and 11 boards as all five starters hit double figures in the win for the visitors.
There was nothing to split the two sides after the opening 10 minutes, but the Scorchers used a 7-0 start to the second to begin to pull away and that would remain the gap going into half-time.

Surrey opened up a lead as large as 17 in the third, but would need a three from Jay Bowie to go into the final period with a 14-point advantage at 51-65.

Sheffield began to mount their comeback with nine straight before making it a three-point game at 69-72 with 2:57 remaining. A big triple from Bowie helped settle the visitors' nerves and they held on for a first league success.

Tony Wroblicky had 19 for the Sharks and they have a quick turnaround as they travel to take on Bristol Flyers on Saturday evening, while the Scorchers host Glasgow Rocks.

Surrey Scorchers 69-84 Glasgow Rocks

Glasgow Rocks scored a second road win of the weekend as they beat Surrey 84-69 using a massive third quarter to win it, behind 18 points from GB International Kieron Achara supported by 17 points and 8 rebounds for Lewis Thomas. It extends a winning run over Surrey to more than two years, now six games, and moves them to a strong 3-1 start for the BBL Championship campaign.

It was a tale of two quarters in the first half, Rocks dominating the first usinga 16-4 run to open an early 24-15 lead as Thomas scored seven points. But Will Neighbour lit up the second stanza for the hosts, raining in a trio of three-pointers on his way to 13 points in a 15-2 start to the period. That turned the game around as the hosts led 41-37 at the half time break.

There was one more large, and decisive, swing to follow. Rocks produced a massive third quarter, pouring in 30 points, including the first nine split between Achara (5) and Gareth Murray (4) to take an instant lead at 46-41.
The lead reached double-figures when Hayden Lescault scored six in a row for 57-47 and Jonny Bunyan's three-pointer maintained that margin at 67-57 heading into the fourth quarter.

A Neighbour three-pointer cut the gap to five in the fourth, but Rocks composed themselves and shut down their hosts defensively. Scorchers didn't score for four minutes, and Murray added four points to his tally as Rocks scored a crucial eight points in a row to take a 75-62 lead into the last four minutes.

They saw the game out from the free-throw line for a fifth double-digit win over Scorchers in the last six meetings.
