scorchersfoundation Scorchers Basketball Foundation: working with the team to help the local community

The Scorchers Basketball Foundation is the community arm of the Surrey Scorchers basketball franchise, with the main aim of growing inclusive basketball participation across the South East.

The Foundation runs projects for disadvantaged groups in Surrey, bringing people together and improving lives through basketball. Their first project will be running basketball sessions for students with physical and learning disabilities at a local college. These sessions will build confidence, develop social skills and aim to improve fitness.

You can support this project and many others in the following ways:

Speak to the trustees in the Foundation t-shirts (not the ones on the court!) if you have any ideas for a project or would like to help.

Other projects

Aviva Community Fund

The Scorchers Foundation regularly provides basketball sessions for young people aged 12+ with learning difficulties, supported by funding from Basketball England. We would now like to take this a step further to develop the project around the local area, with the ultimate aim of providing a pathway to The Special Olympics Great Britain and a chance to compete on the international stage!

You can support this cause by simply registering your vote through the Aviva Community Fund. It's free and can be done in a matter of minutes. Click here for more information about the bid and to register your vote now.

Community Coaching

The Foundation currently works with a number of community organisations, using basketball as a tool to increase levels of fitness and engagement within vulnerable groups. In particular, those with disabilities, the elderly and those with limited access to sport or opportunities.

Mentoring

The Foundation's mentoring project works with the professional Surrey Scorchers players, using them as positive role models for specific young people from vulnerable groups. The difference that can be seen by providing emotional support to an individual is an extraordinary one and often works where other approaches have failed.

With this in mind, the project hopes to work primarily with the Surrey Police Central Youth Intervention Team, mentoring young offenders and pupils excluded from mainstream education.
